As if the past few months of game releases haven’t been packed enough, Metacritic has painted a picture that we’ve got at least one more banger in October left to go.
Phantom Blade Zero, the Wuxia martial arts action RPG from S-GAME Studio, is getting some extremely positive reception across the board, racking up an 88 average score on Metacritic across 40 critic reviews, including six perfect scores.
The shocking part about this is that the 88 Metascore currently ranks the game in 27th place for all games released this year, coming in just short of the 89 score of games like Pokémon Pokopia, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, and Resident Evil Requiem. This means it also just barely edged out 007 First Light, Gears of War: E-Day, Saros, and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, which scored an aggregate of 87.
Destructoid did not receive a code for Phantom Blade Zero, so we will be playing it along with all of you (if we find the time between all the other games to play at the moment), but it’s yet another example of how many top-tier games have been released this calendar year.
Yeah, there’s been a lot of good stuff to play this year. With the nature of my job, I haven’t had a chance to play the majority of the biggest and most fun titles this year, let alone awesome indies. First-world problems, I know, but I hope one day soon I’ll have the time to dip into some of the greatness I’ve missed out on.
Phantom Blade Zero launches for PS5 and PC in a couple days on Oct. 28, and it’s looking like a safe bet for anyone looking for solid combat action and RPG elements. It could easily slot into the GOTY discussion, too.
