Cyberpunk 2077 is on track to get an official movie adaptation produced by Paramount Pictures, but details about what it might be about are rather scarce at the moment. However, what we can say for certain now is that it won’t be a one-to-one carbon copy of the game, as confirmed by CDPR’s chief executive.

Speaking with Polish outlet PAP Biznes, CDPR boss Michał Nowakowski said that amid changing licensing circumstances, the company decided to partner up with Paramount Pictures to realize a “new formula” for Cyberpunk. This “new formula” will be rather different from the game, Nowakowski explained, though he did not want to go into too many details about it at this early stage in production.

What he did disclose is that CDPR “definitely do[es] not want to make a film adaptation of the game,” (machine translated) meaning the movie will be starkly different to the game’s own take on the established Cyberpunk universe. Furthermore, Nowakowski said that CDPR “want[s] to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it’s not going to be a one-to-one game story.”

More details about the movie were promised to come at a later date, but based on this brief comment, it seems the film will not star V or follow their narrative of running and gunning against the implanted clock in their head. While most probably did not expect a carbon copy of the original story, I think the part of not wanting to make a film adaptation of 2077 at all is more interesting, since it more or less confirms this will most likely be an adaptation of the setting and the franchise rather than the title.

Throughout this report by PAP Biznes, the movie is explicitly called Cyberpunk rather than Cyberpunk 2077, so that might be another clue hinting toward an original rather than an adapted take.

At any rate, though, the movie is still years away at least, so we’ll find out sooner or later.
