Crytek looking to go ‘entirely’ free-to-play

Crytek, known primarily for FarCry, Crysis, CryEngine and “No Woman No Cry,” is all about the free-to-play market, with future projects set to fully embrace the model. Iiiiiiinteresting.

Right now we are in the transitional phase of our company, transitioning from packaged goods games into an entirely free-to-play experience,” said CEO Cevat Yerli. “What this entails is that our future, all the new games that we’re working on, as well new projects, new platforms and technologies, are designed around free-to-play and online, with the highest quality development.”

Obviously, Crysis 3 is going to be a more traditional retail experience, but judging by Yerli’s words, more recent projects like Warface may represent the studio’s future. It’s hardly surprising, either. The world of freemium games is getting credible, and lucrative, and could soon make the old $60 business model archaic.

It just needs even more studios like Crytek on board, and I personally hope they start soon.
