Buying an amiibo grants you early access to Mini Mario & Friends amiibo Challenge

Haha, awful

Nintendo is taking amiibo ownership and gating to the next level.

As per its Nintendo Direct presentation yesterday, it announced that Mini Mario & Friends amiibo Challenge would allow for an early access period of roughly one month for anyone who purchases an amiibo from March 25 on from Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop. Everyone else will have to wait until April 28, 2016 when it will hit for free. It’s uh, weird to say the least, especially for everyone who already has a sizable amiibo collection and doesn’t necessarily need to buy anymore at that exact time. Plus, the next wave goes out March 18 — bad timing (or is it “good” marketing timing?).

Evidently 10 amiibo figures will work with the game, Mario, Diddy Kong, Luigi,  Rosalina, Toad, Bowser, Peach, Bowser Jr., Donkey Kong, and Yoshi. Each individual toy will host its own set of levels and powers.
