Kaz Hirai confirms PSP2 touchpad controls

Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai seems to realize that, despite the PSP2 not being announced, we all know it’s a thing. In fact, he was quite open about the console in a New York Times interview, going so far as to confirm a touchpad input system.

“Depending on the game, there are ones where you can play perfectly well with a touch panel, but you can definitely play immersive games better with physical buttons and pads,” says Hirai. “I think there could be games where you’re able to use both in combination.

The polygonal boss also talked about the PlayStation Phone, stopping short of confirming it but talking about it in terms that don’t appear strictly hypothetical: “We don’t want gamers to be asking, ‘what’s the difference between that and a PSP?’ We have to come up with a message that users will understand. It would have to be a product that keeps the PlayStation’s strengths intact.”

So, looks like touch control will be a part of the PSP2. Does that interest you, or do you think having the DS is enough touch-action for you? While I’ve joked before about Sony ripping Nintendo off (well, half-joked), I’m interested to see what they do. Not interested enough to be excited yet. I’ve been burned by the PSP too many times already to get hyped at this early stage.
