It’s not obvious at first
If you’re picking up Hogwarts Legacy, odds are you’ll want to know how to fly first and foremost. We got you covered! Flight is actually unlocked by default through the main storyline, but all of the details therein are obscured. Here’s how to easily tell if flight is enabled for the area you’re in, and how to actually fly.
How to tell if you can fly in Hogwarts Legacy – Why can’t you fly everywhere?
Take a look at the lower left hand corner of the screen when walking around the world. See that little icon near the minimap? That lets you know if flight is allowed or not in the immediate area. This applies to all types of mounts, including brooms and Hippogryphs. To actually fly, hold L1 (LB on Xbox) and press the Circle (B on Xbox) button. You’ll mount up and fly around until you touch down again.
The “no flight” icon typically appears indoors, as well as in static areas like the town of Hogsmeade. Generally speaking, the developers don’t want to you be able to fly everywhere: either to keep certain secret collectibles hidden, or to avoid glitches. If you try to fly into an area that doesn’t allow flight, you’ll witness a translucent wall effect: not unlike a lot of other AAA open world game gates, such as Assassin’s Creed.
Why can’t you fly in Hogsmeade in Hogwarts Legacy?
It’s not too noticeable in most of the game, as many no fly zones make sense (sometimes it’s to prevent cheating a puzzle, or if there’s a canopy above you); but no flight in Hogsmeade is the most puzzling design choice. You’re not alone if you thought “why can’t I fly here?!” – especially if you’re collecting every single guide page and collection chest.
