Warner Bros. has released a new “Red Band” trailer for its upcoming animated sequel Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, which launches on digital and Blu-Ray formats August 31.

From the (NSFW) red band trailer, we can ascertain that the follow-up to 2020’s Scorpion’s Revenge will loosely follow the events of Mortal Kombat II, as Outworld emperor Shao Kahn challenges Earthrealm to a “winner takes all” Mortal Kombat tournament — with an eye to conquering not just Earthrealm, but all of the known realms. In a dual-storyline, Hanzo Hasashi, now adopting the form of colossal bore Scorpion, will embark upon his own quest to search for the legendary Kamidogu.

MK II veterans Kitana,Mileena, Jade, Kintaro, and Kung Lao are among those joining the cast, as are MK 3‘s Kurtis Stryker, and robo-assassins Sektor and Cyrax. Flying for the flag for later MK entries are Deadly Alliance‘s Li Mei, and Mortal Kombat X‘s D’Vorah. What an all-star kast! (In before Sindel is revealed as a post-kredits stinger.) Oh, we also see what appears to be the second Sub-Zero, Kuai Liang. Battle of the Realms looks set to treat the source material with respect, with more than a touch of Masters of the Universe about it. What with the recent live-action movie, it’s been a pretty solid year for Mortal Kombat media fans… now if only we can get a fresh update for the game. (Edit: I jinxed it.)
