Kingdoms of Amalur won’t be getting a remaster unless EA approves

Just last week, THQ Nordic revealed that it had acquired the IP rights to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Fans of the game were excited since this could have meant a couple of things. A sequel to the game that never got a chance or a remaster of the original to gauge further interest. Turns out that remaster idea is on ice, though, as THQ Nordic confirmed to Eurogamer that EA still holds the publishing rights on the game.

“EA still has the publishing rights to Reckoning,” a rep told Eurogamer’s Robert Purchase. They then continued, “At this stage, we ‘only’ acquired the intellectual property. Given our track record, we know what the burning questions (remaster, remake, port to current-gen systems etc.) are, but we decided do not answer those specifically as we tend to put our heads together first and then do our homework, and only start to talk about anything once we feel confident and very familiar with the franchise.”

While I wouldn’t rule out a current gen re-release completely, it doesn’t seem like it will be happening anytime soon. You gotta love the convoluted mess that is corporate licensing. It’s the reason why we never got that stellar looking Xbox 360 port of GoldenEye 007.
