Nevar Furget: Army of Two’s 9/11 trailer is good stuff

EA’s Army of Two is not a game one might expect to court controversial subjects with any degree of class and grace. It’s a big, dumb action game with two meatheaded mercenaries that drown in their own testosterone. That said, the latest trailer for the game is making a bit of a murmur due to the fact that it opens with a scene from the 9/11 twin tower attacks. As the first scene begins, we see the Twin Towers smoking on a television screen before the two main characters are shown reacting to the event that changes the course of history.

The trailer is shown above for your own viewing pleasure and shows off a little of the two main characters. I personally thought that Army of Two would feature a pair of nondescript, customizable mercs whose personalities would come from the player via headset, so I’m disappointed to see them with their own characters (a rarity for me). It’s still got potential to be a good game from a company that’s clearly doing its best to show it isn’t just a Madden factory. Displaying a sense of maturity in its understated showing of the 9/11 attacks is a good sign, in my opinion.

I now wait for some idiot to discover this trailer and scream about it being offensive, because Heaven forbid a videogame has the audacity to try and show world events on the same level that television and film can.
