Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture won the British Writers’ Guild’s award for best video game writing

Everybody’s Gonna Get Awards

The British Writers’ Guild Awards is an annual event where the best of British writing across TV, film, radio, stage, and video games are acknowledged and celebrated. For those in the industry, it’s a fairly big deal. This year, the big award went to Russell T. Davies, the guy who successfully brought Doctor Who back from the dead in 2005, for his “outstanding contribution to writing.”

The ‘Best writing in a video game’ award may not have been the main event of the show, but there was still some stiff competition between the nominees, as both the critically acclaimed Her Story and the cult hit Sunless Sea were in the running to win it.

The eventual winner of the award was The Chinese Room’s fantastic Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, written by Dan Pinchbeck.

Personally, I’m really glad about it winning, as the writing in Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture was one of the main reasons why I awarded it my personal game of the year. It managed to effortlessly weave multiple narrative threads together in a really interesting, subtle, and non-linear way. It was a bit of a slow burner, sure, but I really liked it nonetheless.

Honestly, I’m surprised an event like this even has a video game award. Usually, games in the UK are constrained to their own events, such as the BAFTA Game Awards, so it’s nice to see them considered on par with other mediums for a change.
