…but it will live on through Vita
Sony is discontinuing its support for PlayStation Mobile on Android devices, the company announced today.
PlayStation Mobile launched in 2012 as a channel for developers to release games on both PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Certified devices. The service and its games will continue to function on tablets and smartphones running Android 4.4.2 and previous firmware builds.
However, Sony won’t guarantee compatibility with future updates and the store will not be available on Android L, the operating system’s next major release. The company is also ending its PlayStation Certified program, asserting it has no plans to confer that status on any other devices.
Aside from a few standout titles, such as Rymdkapsel, Tokyo Jungle Mobile, and Super Crate Box; PlayStation Mobile never really caught fire. Sony appears to be allocating its resources elsewhere, while leaving the door open for developers to publish games on Vita without the typical certification process.
