Oh good, Namco is shutting down Tales of Phantasia

Sigh

Tales of Phantasia only just arrived on the iOS App Store this year, but Bandai Namco is already pulling the plug on the mobile role-playing game.

The publisher announced plans to “cease distribution” of the title. That will go into effect on August 28, 2014, effectively rendering the app useless, as the game requires an internet connection to play. Any in-app purchases or save data players might have amassed will just vanish in a puff of smoke.

The dystopian future of always-online free-to-play games is here, folks. And it’s pretty grim.
