Square Enix: 3D gaming with glasses a huge problem

Publisher Square Enix has claimed that, while glasses-free 3D is a great idea, the ocular requirements that 3D consoles like the PS3 represent a “huge” problem.

“I think 3D without glasses is a win; 3D with glasses is a huge problem,” said tech director Julien Merceron to Videogamer. “I think the only way to make 3D work in the living room is to remove the need for glasses, and that will lead to wider adoption.

“I think the 3D on the 3DS is fairly successful. We’re starting to see a few games that are really taking good advantage of 3D, and we’ll probably start to see 3D on more mobile devices. Maybe it’s going to then move to slightly larger screens, on tablets, and then slowly move to netbooks and laptops before we get the right technology together to apply it [3D] to really large screens.”

Some industry spokespeople have painted 3D as the next big leap forward in entertainment, but it’s obvious that the glasses restrictions exclude a significant amount of people and, of course, look stupid. It’s hard to become the latest sensation with those issues barring the way.
