PS5 and PS4 ports for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 combined to sell over 11 million copies in July alone, according to a new report.
Alinea Analytics estimates that Black Ops 2 sold 8.2 million digital copies while Black Ops 1 brought in three million, with both games combining to dwarf the rest of the releases found on the console last month.
The PS5 and PS4 versions of the titles launched in 2010 and 2012 respectively dominated the sales charts, which includes several other elder titles like Grand Theft Auto V (yeah, it’s STILL selling) and Minecraft, in addition to Palworld, which released in 1.0 after multiple years in early access.
The rest of the list includes just two “new” titles, which are also remakes of classics: Assassin’s Creed Black Flag: Resynced (1.6 million) and Halo: Campaign Evolved, the latter of which sold just 351,000 copies after Xbox’s controversial decision to bring it to the rival platform. The rest of the list is populated by sports titles like FC 26 and EA Sports College Football 27.
July was definitely not the biggest month for new game releases, as the summer often isn’t, but wow, this list is rough to look at when it comes to new releases. Gamers are clearly desperate to play games on PlayStation, but completely new ones? Not so much, apparently.
The demand for older CoD titles is obviously there, especially when it comes to these two games specifically. BO2 is often considered one of the greatest CoD titles, period, with BO1 also beloved for its multitude of modes. I would not be surprised to see Microsoft and Activision continue this trend with older games, although it could create issues when it comes to selling copies of the new CoD, Modern Warfare 4, coming in October.
August and September are both full of new game releases to look forward to, but for now, it appears players are sticking with some old faithfuls to get them through the summer haze.
