Race the Sun will drop on August 19th

Back at PAX East, I had a chance to play a diamond in the rough called Race the Sun, that I described as a mix between Tiny Wings and Star Fox. It's basically an endless-type flight game, but with the added twist of extra mo...

Review: The Drowning photo
Review: The Drowning
by Chris Carter

First-person shooters on the mobile market are pretty hit or miss. When they don't follow an on-rails scheme, it can be pretty hard to get a solid dual virtual sticks system in place, and before long, users are pining for a real controller.

But The Drowning attempts to "revolutionize" (in the creator's own words) the mobile market with a brand new control system that isn't widely implemented yet. My response, after actually playing it, would be: "there's a reason for that."

New releases: Civilization V gets a massive expansion photo
New releases: Civilization V gets a massive expansion
by Fraser Brown

Civilization V is pretty good, but Brave New World makes it wonderful. Launching in a couple of days, the latest expansion is filled with a bevy of new features, most of which improve the tiresome late game with new paths to victory and greater flexibility. The changes and additions are so expansive that this might as well be a new game, from the diverse civilizations -- including Venice, a civ that can't even generate settlers -- to the engaging trade system. It's really rather rad.

A few other notable titles are also dropping this week. The Walking Dead: 400 Days snuck up on us last week, and now it's arriving the App Store. I found it to be a novel narrative experiment but not quite as affecting as the first series. On top of this, we've got the shooty, crafty Guncraft; the anniversary celebrating Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection; and men hitting each other as they try to hold a slippery pigskin

Anything grabbing your attention this week?

Ubisoft embraces two-screen gaming... just not on Wii U photo
Ubisoft embraces two-screen gaming... just not on Wii U
by Tony Ponce

From our time at this year's E3, we've noticed that a number of studios have become quite enamored with the concept of "second-screen gaming" -- the use of a device such as a smartphone or tablet to interact with a console game in some fashion. No company seems to have embraced this more than Ubisoft, which will provide companion apps for Assassin's Creed IV, The Division, Watch Dogs, and The Crew.

"I'm convinced it's the future," stated Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot in an interview with GamesIndustry International. "What I like in second-screen play is its accessibility, which means different types of people can play. Those who don't know how to play with the [controller] or don't like to play with it can use touch. So that's the first good element.

"The second one is it gives you an opportunity to play from outside the home with your friends who are playing from their homes. So I'm in an airport, and I can play with my friends using my iPad if I have a good connection. We think this is going to open lots of new possibilities to the industry, and to the type of gameplay that can occur."

Everything that happened at the Ubisoft E3 conference photo
Everything that happened at the Ubisoft E3 conference
by Chris Carter

It sounds like you guys weren't impressed so far with the Microsoft and EA conferences, so Ubisoft had a chance to shine in their wake. With equal parts of over and underwhelming reveals, Ubisoft capped off a presentation with the very promising looking The Division, which will land on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

So far, it looks like Ubisoft has had the strongest conference, just like last year. The last minute reveal of The Division made its strongest case for the title, but of course we still have Sony later tonight, and Nintendo tomorrow morning. Anything can happen.
