Review: Transformers Prime: The Game

I'll admit, I've struggled to keep up with the Transformers brand since Generation One. I've played the High Moon Studios games, and loved them, but the TV shows have been something of a blur to me -- be it Armada, Animated, ...

Fall of Cybertron PC won't come to Australia

In Australia, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will not be getting a PC release. Aussie gamers will instead have to stick with consoles, nothing at all, or Plan B.  When PC Gamer asked Activision for a reason, it got a very abrupt, "No info. It's just not available."  Well, that sucks for Australian PC gamers. Still, they've gotta be getting used to these regular screwjobs by now.

Transformers: War for Cybertron was one of my top multiplayer games of 2010. Something about it just worked surprisingly well, and High Moon Studios deserved oodles of kudos for providing the Transformers license with an original, structurally sound, vastly entertaining game that respected the franchise in a way other games (and certain movies) had not.

When faced with a sequel, High Moon has taken the "if it's not broken, don't fix it" approach and essentially pulled the same trick twice. In fact, it's hard to say exactly what the differences are between Fall of Cybertron and War for Cybertron at a glance.

It only gets marginally easier with an extended look.

E3: Jimpressions of Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

Although I was not scheduled to try Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, this fan of High Moon Studios' previous offering couldn't resist grabbing some hands-on time with the game at E3, finally test driving Grimlock and seeing if he was done justice. I do believe he was.

Unlike the rest of the roster, Grimlock has no real ranged attacks, preferring to smash opponents with his sword or grab enemies and hurl them into others. Of course, his T-rex form is the star of the show, and the demo gave me plenty of opportunity to roast Insecticons with a gout of flame or smash them to pieces via stomps and tail whips. The ability to insta-kill weaker enemies by tossing them in the air and biting the poor bastards in half is quite a lovely touch, too.

I very quickly noticed that the game's enjoying some sharp graphical improvements. While War for Cybertron wasn't hideous, it certainly wasn't the most beautiful of games. Fall of Cybertron is visually superior even at a glance, with highly detailed character models and gleaming light effects. A hopeful indicator of the overall improvement to be found in this followup.

There's only one complaint so far -- the Insecticon Kickback speaks with Shrapnel's speech impediment. As a hardcore Insecticon fan, this is the kind of inconsistency that makes me break out in hives and want to cut myself. High Moon, please do not make me cut myself.

I'm now prepared to survive the Fall of Cybertron

When this turned up and I opened the package, my wife said, "They sent you a lunchbox? You're an asshole." That's a fair enough assessment, I suppose.  Anyway, I got this mad tat in the mail today. It's a steel box conta...

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron trailer AW F*CK GRIMLOCK!

A teaser trailer has been unleashed for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. It's short, it's full of static, but it says absolutely everything you need to know. Click on the video above and drown in pure, unadulterated badassery.  I am officially fully erect right now, and I'm not even a big Dinobot fan! This game is going to make me do terrible things to myself.

Some upcoming details for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron have hit the Internet (by way of NeoGAF) and there are some very exciting things on the cards. It seems somebody at High Moon Studios responded to all my harassment, with word that the Insecticons will play a part in the sequel.

As previously noted, the Dinobots will be in full force, and cold-hearted Decepticon officer Shockwave will apparently play a big role in the story. Other details include far larger battlefields with more enemies onscreen, a deeper customization mode for multiplayer, and a totally overhauled look for Optimus Prime and Megatron.

Oh yeah, and Gestalt Transformers (big robots made out of five smaller ones) will be part of the gameplay. Yes please!

Check out the (potentially spoiler-flavored) details below. I am pretty pumped!

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron announced photo
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron announced
by Jim Sterling

Activision has today revealed (via Game Informer, which is basically just a big press release these days) Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, a sequel to last year's War for Cybertron. Oh, and Dinobat fans are in for a treat, because Grimlock is a confirmed character!

Game Informer has two covers available for its upcoming reveal issue -- one with Grimlock, and another with Optimus Prime kneeling over a seemingly dead Bumblebee. Looks like things are going to get serious!

I loved War for Cybertron, and I trust High Moon Studios to deliver yet another hot Transformers title. I can't wait to see more, and I can only hope that if Grimlock's getting the love, we see some Insecticon fun on the Decepticon side. A guy can dream, anyway!

[Update: S'all done, folks. The winners have been contacted by way of private message on Destructoid.]

Razer was kind enough to throw some awesome-looking Transformers 3 DeathAdder mice our way. Sadly, we don't get to keep them -- they're for you guys! We've got one of each type (Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, and Shockwave) plus one Transformers 3 Vespular mouse mat to give away.

To enter this contest, simply reply with a comment telling us who your favorite Transformer is and why. (Example: "Grimlock, because he's got a bib. Enough said.") This is restricted to United States residents, and please, only do one comment for the sake of my sanity. You have until noon Pacific on Monday, September 19 to enter.

As someone who not-so-secretly wants to get an Autobot insignia tattoo, I must say, these mice look sweet. Jealous of whoever gets one of them in the mail!

Review: Transformers: Dark of the Moon photo
Review: Transformers: Dark of the Moon
by Jim Sterling

Before the review begins, I feel it's my duty to warn anybody who considers purchasing this -- there's barely any mention of the Moon at all. In fact, the Moon appears in the campaign's end credits more than it appears in the game itself.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is a big lie.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon the videogame is a prologue to the upcoming movie and helps to setup some of the events and characters you'll see in the upcoming Michael Bay explosion-fest. Now that developer High Moon Studios is in charge of the development, the controls and gameplay will largely be similar to that of Transformers: War for Cybertron.

You'll have two main weapons, both of which can also be used when in the new Stealth Force mode which is where you can use your weapons while in vehicle mode. I actually found myself staying in Stealth Force mode the most as it got me through the levels a lot faster. A good thing, since the levels I played were pretty bland.

I also went through the multiplayer, which was surprisingly fun.
