Pac-Man, the cocky, pinstripe suit-wearing noir hero

A hyper-stylized version of Pac-Man that exaggerates the violence of the rather tame arcade original? Yeah, we've gone down that road before. "Goodnight Sweet Pakman" may be no different in that regard, but I can't stop watching the opening 40 seconds over and over again. That A Night at the Roxbury head bob gets me every single time! Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures is what it sounds like

What makes a Pac-Man game a Pac-Man game? Perhaps I'm overthinking this. Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures puts the iconic character in a story built off the animated television series of the same name, which makes a lot of...

Retro game Post-It stop-motion animation is rad

We've seen Post-It Note stop-motion animation before, but none quite so clean as the above video that reportedly took eleven months and 4,800 Post-Its to make. The stillness of the shots and the transitions between different...

Game heroes died so that you can have this poster

Did you guys get a chance to check out "The Game Over Tinies" in brentalfloss the comic? Once again, co-writers brentalfloss and Dan Roth and artist Andrew Dobson created an abecedarian comic of videogame character deaths -- ...

Even more 'Game Overs' in storybook rhyme

A couple weeks back, brentalfloss the comic began an arc parodying the dark comedy children's book The Gashlycrumb Tinies -- that book's author, Edward Gorey, is the subject of today's Google Doodle, by the by. Anyway, "The G...

Confused? It's not 'Pac-Man,' it's 'Not Pacman' photo
Confused? It's not 'Pac-Man,' it's 'Not Pacman'
by Tony Ponce

Let the headline swirl in your head a bit, then come back.

Indie studio Stabyourself.net has a knack for recreating classic 80s games pixel for pixel but with the application of modern physics for a wild new take on an old favorite. You might have played Not Tetris, an otherwise faithful copy of the Game Boy original except that now the bricks literally fall like bricks. Of course, you are probably more familiar with Mari0, in which the mustache man cheats his way through the Mushroom Kingdom with the aid of a portal gun.

Not Pacman (no hyphen) is likewise just like Pac-Man (see the hyphen?) only totally different. Instead of controlling Pac directly, you tilt the entire board with either a keyboard, mouse, gamepad, or steering wheel (dead serious!). In this version, the ghosts don't move voluntarily -- as you tilt your way to victory, you have to carefully avoid rolling one of the wayward specters into your yellow friend.

It definitely changes the way you play, even if it's than a little frustrating and will probably give you bouts of nausea. But it's free, so... yeah!

Man up! Pac-Man and Mega Man in Street Fighter X Tekken photo
Man up! Pac-Man and Mega Man in Street Fighter X Tekken
by Jonathan Holmes

Previously hinted at company mascots Pac-Man and Mega Man have been confirmed as PS3/PSV exclusive characters for Street Fighter X Tekken, joining Cole from inFamous, and Sony Japan mascots Toro and Kuro. Unless the 360 version of the game gets an all star group like The Prince of all Cosmos, Linn Kurasawa, Alan Wake, and Ilo and Milo as its own exclusive characters, then there is no way it's going to be able to compete (at least not for my money). Seeing as the game is coming out really soon, chances are slim that the 360 versions will be getting any exclusives at all. Microsoft has got to be feeling pretty hosed right about now!

Another group who's already reportedly feeling hosed over this development is the Mega Man fan community. A lot of them are already saying that the fact that Capcom is choosing Bad Box Art Mega Man over all the other Mega Mans in the history of Mega Mans for this coveted position on SFxT's roster is a slap in the face, especially seeing as his in-game story closely matches the mythology of the Mega Man Legends universe.

As a 35 year old man and a Mega Man fan since 1988, I can say that I don't feel that way at all. Not only do I think that Bad Box Art Mega Man fits with this particular game much better than any other incarnation of the character, I also see this move as a brilliant form of self-mockery on Capcom's part. Read the rest of the post for an explanation of the logic on that.
