I don't remember the last time I read or watched a feel-good story involving videogames in the mainstream news. Hell, I'm having trouble finding news within game media outlets that doesn't paint a bleak or damning future for...

Champions Online gets massive vehicle update

Champions Online has gone through some rather big changes since its launch back in 2009, most notably the one in 2011 which saw the MMO go free-to-play. Now there's another rather large update to the game, with...

Gearbox details late fan's inclusion in Borderlands 2 photo
Gearbox details late fan's inclusion in Borderlands 2
by Tony Ponce

Last year's most heartwarming game-related story was without a doubt that of Michael John Mamaril, the 22-year-old Borderands fan who lost his life to cancer. His friend Carlo sent an email to Gearbox Software explaining the situation with Michael, and not only did Gearbox produce a special eulogy read by Claptrap himself, the company also announced plans to incorporate Michael into Borderlands 2 as an NPC.

Yesterday, Gearbox held Community Day 2012 in Dallas, where fans could meet with the devs and just have a grand ol' time. During a panel with the Borderlands 2 team, an audience member asked why the company likes to go out of its way to reach out to fans, specifically mentioning the Claptrap marriage proposal video and the Michael Mamaril eulogy (check it out here, starting at the 2:46:40 mark). Details of Michael's incorporation followed.

Michael's NPC will be hanging around somewhere in Sanctuary, and every time you meet him, he will give you loot of rarity level blue or higher. Essentially, he's the guy you can count on when the game starts to wear you down. Not only that, meeting him will also give you the "Tribute to a Vault Hunter" Achievement, immortalizing the man both in the game and on the Xbox Leaderboard. That's pretty heavy.

I can't even properly put into words how incredible this whole thing is. It's just, I mean, wow. Thank you Gearbox, for keeping the memory of a true fan alive for a long time to come.

New Arkham City behind the scenes vid talks sound design

Rocksteady did absolutely everything right in Batman: Arkham City. This includes the stellar sound design; punching thugs makes a satisfying thud, bones make an earth-shattering crack, and even Batman's cape itself has a cas...

DCUO: Diary of a Green Lantern Corps reservist part II photo
DCUO: Diary of a Green Lantern Corps reservist part II
by Fraser Brown

(For the first part of my mission to rid Metropolis of crime, go here and for the third, go here)

When last we saw Green Lantern reservist Zentarim the Space Cowboy, he was brooding about crime and preparing to kick evil in the face and I was preparing for DC Universe Online's free-to-play service to go live. Sadly, the tentative date of October 19 has arrived, yet still no word from SOE. So it looks like you'll have to hold off on your free adventures in Metropolis and Gotham.

But fear not, our cosmic hero is still fighting the good fight on your behalf. He's been gallivanting in space, introducing demons to chainsaws and making inappropriate remarks about Wonder Woman's rear.

Preview: Champions Online photo
Preview: Champions Online
by Ben Perlee

I'll be the first to admit: The idea of being a superhero has been a stupid little fantasy of mine many times in my life. Who doesn't want to be able to have amazing powers and do awesome things, preferably with a theme song? Spiderman, The Hulk, Batman, Wolverine, and Storm, all stand up as the ideals for many generations of people. They are our heroes.

So let's be real -- anyone who doesn't want to fly or shoot lasers from their eyes or summon the bestial strength of a gorilla has serious problems, and probably should not be your friend.

So it's people like me that Champions Online is appealing too. Developed by Cryptic Studios (the team behind NCsoft's City of Heroes), Champions Online aims to to take the superhero MMO formula originated with City of Heroes and expand upon it. Promising to be the deep “super” customizable MMO experience, Champions Online brings the heroics to a very deep level.

Hit the jump for my impressions.

E3 09: hands on with DC Universe Online photo
E3 09: hands on with DC Universe Online
by Colette Bennett

Any DC fan was probably already drooling as soon as they heard that Sony Online Entertainment was working on an MMO featuring the characters of the DC Universe, but I found myself wondering what it might have to offer beyond the usual level grind and endless searching for a healer that most of my online experiences seem to have consisted of.

That's why I found myself genuinely excited to get some play time with DC Universe Online. Described as "action wrapped around an MMO", it looks like SOE aimed to make this a game for MMO fans still in love with the concept of the genre but weary of some of it's major flaws. Plus, let's face it -- it's a blast to fight alongside Batman.

Hit the jump for more.
