Reviews Elsewhere: Crysis 3

How about that Crysis 3, eh? The game released yesterday and firmly established itself as the mark by which future videogame graphics shall be measured -- at least for a while. There's no doubt this is one beautiful game when...

EA + Tabloid = Half-naked woman in Crysis 3 bodypaint

The Sun loves to talk about how dangerous those violent videogames are, and frequently runs stories vilifying interactive entertainment for inspiring crime and teaching the youth of Britain all sorts of terrible things. Still...

Tweak Crysis 3 with these console commands

Electronic Arts has passed along a list of console commands for Crysis 3 to Game Front, which is a sentence I didn't think I'd be able to write today. My first thought was that these would mostly pertain to graphical options ...

Pitting Crysis 3 against the GeForce GTX Titan photo
Pitting Crysis 3 against the GeForce GTX Titan
by Jim Sterling

Today, hardware reviewers were able to lift the lid on NVIDIA's latest beast, the GeForce GTX Titan. Boasting a GK110 chip with 2688 CUDA cores and loads of other stuff I barely understand, NVIDIA claims that when you rock three of these things in SLI, you get the world's first gaming super computer.

So far, so prideful.

With a trio of these behemoths, my job was simple. I'm a software guy -- I make other people do my hardware stuff, and then play I games. Crysis 3 is one such game, and with Crytek suggesting next generation consoles won't touch what its latest first-person shooter in the graphics department, there's no better test of the Titan's mettle.

Review: Crysis 3 photo
Review: Crysis 3
by Jim Sterling

Crysis 2 was seen as something of a black sheep by fans of the original Crysis. I personally loved it, but others were turned off by its comparatively linear environments and plain New York backdrop. For many, the open jungle of Crysis was sorely missed.

Crysis 3 hopes to strike a compromise between the worlds of previous games, presenting a literal urban jungle. New York is overgrown with lush vegetation and fields of grass, while the remnants of concrete structures poke out amongst the green. The result is a game that looks like neither installment, yet plays a little like both.

Though maybe not quite in the ratio fans had hoped for.

New releases: Slicing and dicing in Metal Gear Rising photo
New releases: Slicing and dicing in Metal Gear Rising
by Fraser Brown

I'm aching all over after enjoying the weekend just a wee bit too much, so I don't really feel ready for another Monday. Not having the ability to stop time, I'm just going to have to power through. At least there are plenty of games to help me forget the fact that I feel like death warmed up.

Two big releases are looking set to dominate this week: the obnoxiously named Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Crysis 3, which I guess also has a silly, if more mundane, title. I'm not particularly excited about either of them, but as a chap who favors swords over guns, I'm far more likely to indulge in Raiden's cyborg adventures than any nanosuit shenanigans.

Also dropping this week is Paradox's war-focused Napoleonic romp, March of the Eagles; PC puzzler, The Bridge; crazy platforming, exploring, and turn-based strategy in A Valley Without Wind 2; things for your old PSP; and a bunch of DLC.

What are you splashing out on this week?

Crysis 3's sharp-dressed trailer is pretty adorable

There's a time and a place for dismal, bleak, "dark n' gritty" trailers, but there's a time for silliness too. Crysis 3 is having its silly time with this new trailer, letting us know how much fun it is to be a nanosuited ba...
