You can now play classic Doom…on some earrings

Rip and tear...while looking FABULOUS!

There will almost certainly never be an end to the sheer number of things Doom can be ported to, but earrings are a new one. We’ve already reached the point where Doom was running inside Doom in some weird Inception-style melding (is that a dated reference?). Now, someone has managed to combine the iconic FPS with fashion.

Streamer, “self-taught dev,” and Twitter user Alina has posted a short clip of herself wearing a pair of Game Boy-inspired earrings. Only these earrings can be seen playing a dinky version of id Software’s classic shooter, Doom.

This came about not long after Alina posted a tweet about how said earrings can actually be programmed to play Tetris on them. Soon after, user @zKassaiAudio set things in motion by predicting that someone would run Doom on the earrings, which is exactly what happened.

Can I get a pair?

Looking at some additional Twitter/X posts, Alina says she’s using the Thumby keychain. This is a tiny gaming device from a company called TinyCircuits, which has been designed after the Nintendo Game Boy.

Given that the Thumby is programmable, it’s feasible for anyone with coding skills to put a micro version of Doom on there. As for the earrings, they’ll need to be bought separately. It might seem like a gimmick, but it’ll give you something to play when your phone’s out of signal.

As for the game itself, well, Doom officially turns 30 years old next month. That’s longer than some people reading this have been alive. It begs the question of how id (and the fans) will be celebrating its legacy. Doom fashion accessories seem like a good start.
