Xbox boss predicts PS4 price cut for the West

Markdown coming in Japan this October

Speaking with IGN, Xbox kingpin Phil Spencer asserted his belief that a PlayStation 4 price drop in western markets is around the corner following Sony Japan’s recent markdown announcement.

“I fully expect they [PlayStation] will drop price,” said Spencer. “When I think about the playbook they’ve used in the past, we feel good about the plans we have in place going forward in the holiday. If history tells, then we’ll see a price drop from them coming.”

Spencer thinks the announcement might come at Paris Games Week, where Sony plans to host a press conference for the European market after the company’s no-show at Gamescom this year.

Regardless of when it comes, Spencer thinks a potential price drop would be a good thing, saying “It’s great for gamers when price competition happens. We saw that last holiday, and we saw crazy sales numbers on all of the consoles.”

SCEJA plans to slash the PS4’s Japanese price from ¥39,980 down to ¥34,980 on October 1.
