WTF? Destination Arcade only available this summer

Recommended Videos

So you know that new Xbox LIVE Arcade dashboard look and feel? The one that will make it easier to find and purchase XBLA games, see the hottest deals, and generally make things pretty? Well, enjoy it while it lasts — it will only be active and usable during the “Summer of Arcade.”

Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb has stated on his blog “that the Destination Arcade” app will only be available for the duration of the Summer of Arcade promotion which ends August 18th.” After that? Then what?

“My understanding is that it will only be available during the Summer of Arcade,” he writes in the comments of his blog. “After that, you will not be able to use it.”

It’s my understanding that this whole thing is pretty dumb, and rather perplexing. Why go out of your way to create an attractive, easy-to-use application to browse titles (it’s arguably a bit messy as it is now), but only make it available and functional for a month? Seems like a cheap ploy to bring attention the “Summer of Arcade”; but with the job already done (we’ve reported on the announcement and then the one week delay already), why not just have the app continue to function?

Folks outside of the United States, don’t worry about any of this — “Destination Arcade” is only going to be available in the US, anyhow.
