DotEmu has announced that LizardCube’s Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap has sold nearly half a million copies since its launch back in 2017 on PC and consoles. Furthermore, the Sega Master System remake will also be coming to mobile platforms later this month.

Originally released on the SMS back in 1989, Wonder Boy III is a still-great action RPG which sees the retro hero don various anthropomorphic guises in order to travel the land and defeat a series of evil dragons. It’s a very earlier example of the non-linear exploration style that had been popularised by Metroid on the NES a few years earlier.

The 2017 remake features beautiful hand-drawn graphics, re-recorded music, new difficulty settings, and improved interface and the ability to play as the all-new Wonder Girl. Players can also switch between the modern graphics/audio and the classic Sega Master System style at any time with the press of a button. In a neat touch, passwords from the original release are still supported.

The mobile port – adapted by Playdigious, will feature optimisation for touch-screen technology, but will include all of the features of the console and PC editions. Launching on iOS and Android devices, customers who pre-register at the Google Play store will receive a 30% discount on the title upon its release, currently scheduled for May 30.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is available now on PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
