Where is the Cenotaph in Border Checkpoint Rest Town in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

Don't go there at night unless you want a fight.

The NPCs in Dragon’s Dogma 2 love walking up to players and telling them about points of interest around each location, but they never explain why.

As you make your way around Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s world, you’ll become pretty confident in using the oxcarts to travel between major locations. This is something I spent ages doing early on because I just wanted to see as many places as possible and explore as much of the map as I could without tackling the main quest. However, when I entered Border Checkpoint Town, which you travel to from Vernworth, I was informed that I should check out the Cenotaph. I had no idea what this was or where to find it, but it’s worth seeking out.

The Cenotaph is located east of Border Checkpoint Rest town in Dragon’s Dogma 2. To find it, head out of the settlement along the road you entered on the oxcart. Follow the path through a cliff, where you’ll encounter some bandits and harpies, and you’ll emerge in an open area with a few oxen milling around.

This area, shown on the map above, is where the Cenotaph is located. There are gravestones dotted around and ruins of what might once have been a much grander structure. Part of it still stands to the right of the location, where you’ll need to throw a Pawn over the wall to get them to open the gate. Beware of the skeletons at the bottom of the ladder in this part of the area. I fell to them quite a few times and just sent my Pawns down there in the end before clearing up after them.

The Cenotaph near Border Checkpoint Town in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is linked to a few quests. You’ll need to visit it as part of the Prey for the Pack quest before heading out to locate and save Rodge. It’s also part of a wider quest arc centered around the Ancient Battlegrounds.

The main purpose of this location, though, at least as far as I can tell, is to get you to fight two specific monsters. The first is a Griffin, which will fly here daily to pick up an entire Ox and fly off with it. If you attack it, which I did, then you can fight it, climb onto it, and ride it back to its nest in the Misty Marshes.

Be warned, this is an incredibly tough fight that saw me and my entire party wiped multiple times. Once the Griffin has reached its final two health bars, it’ll start flying away and using lightning attacks, leaving fewer opportunities to ride and damage it. Bringing high-level Pawns is a must.

The other reason to visit the Cenotaph near Border Checkpoint Town is at night. The spirits here are disturbed for some reason, and a Wight will spawn at night to raise skeletons and kill anyone who ventures too close. I stumbled upon this while trying to discover what everyone was talking about. Turns out the townsfolk are just terrified of this flying red undead dude. Killing this enemy is also no joke, but it’s worth it if you’re a magick user and want a powerful weapon.
