What’s new with Minecraft: Server portals, DDoS, and cannons

Recommended Videos

Another Minecraft story? Already!? Yeah, I can’t help myself. That said, I figured I’d cram a bunch of new happenings in one post rather than clog up the site too much. Enough talk — let’s dive into it. Some jerks did a DDoS attack on minecraft.net. I’d rather not give them any additional publicity, but you can read more about it here.

The other big-ticket item would have to be a tweet designer Markus Persson wrote yesterday. It’s pretty self-explanatory: “Yes, you will eventually be able to link servers with portals. NOT SOON, though.” Way to set our expectations on the time frame from the get-go.

Between that and the Halloween update, which adds “six new block types (five of them have unique abilities), one new monster, a new dimension, and a couple of bug fixes,” we likely won’t be getting much else in the way of new content for a while.

We still have plenty of ridiculous or otherwise awesome player creations to see, though. Check out two recent ones below.

First is a video by brt5470 that does an excellent job of showcasing the reflective nature of Minecraft; something we don’t see a whole lot of. I guess sprawling structures, recreations of things from pop culture, and other miscellaneous stuff is what brings in the crowds?

Anyway, I feel like I should add that this video was sent to me by Maurice with the title “Another goddamn Minecraft video for Jordan.” Ayup.

Speaking of that weirder side to players’ creativity, here’s a video by kiershar of an animal cannon. It shoots animals into space, apparently. You can thank Reddit for bringing this to my attention, and yes, there is a follow-up video that shows a self-launch. See it here.
