What if household furniture had DRM?

DRM chair doesn’t want to be exploited

SimCity‘s always-online DRM scheme is seriously the worst. How anti-consumer can you get? Whenever a studio decides to implement something extremely backwards like limited installations or online checks, you have to wonder if there was even a single Chuckie Finster-esque voice of reason who said, “I don’t think that’s such a good idea.” Could you imagine if DRM was applied to something as commonplace as household furniture?

Over on The Deconstruction, an engineering competition / collaboration event in which participants take a preexisting object and improve it in some way, the Swiss team of Les Sugus opted to “improve” a simple wooden chair so that after it’s sat on eight times, the joints melt down and the chair collapses. And whenever someone gets off the chair, it produces a knocking sound that indicates the number of remaining “sits” allowed. Talk about biting satire!

If putting DRM in a chair sounds entirely impractical, how in the world could anyone think putting DRM in computer software is any better?
