Norbert is an interesting character that always shows up in Story and Endless Mode. He is the bringer of chaos and devoted to ruining your run in as many creative ways as he can think of.

What’s unique about this Shift at Midnight character is that Norbert has all the telltale signs that he is a doppelganger. He acts strange off the jump as he introduces himself and stands behind the counter as if he works there when paying for his goods. He also won’t answer any questions you ask him, or appear on the NET Database (even though he has a valid ID).

This is the ultimate doppelganger test, for shooting or flat-out murdering Norbert won’t send one of the five entity types your way at the end of your shift that night, but will instead cause a chain reaction of unpredictable chaos.

Norbert will randomly return during a new shift, coming up with ways to destroy your store’s reputation or try to reduce bonuses you can get. He will do this by riding through the store on a motorcycle, poisoning you with his lemonade stand (that he doesn’t have a permit for) or by disguising himself as a customer (only visible using the Scanner).

Harming Norbert in any way forces his hand, where he will try his darndest to make you kill other customers or directly try to harm you. This gnome is an unkillable maniacally laughing force of nature.

For content creators, the obvious choice is to kill Norbert, so he brings chaos and unpredictability to their run. But for those looking to get the True Ending, serving Norbert when he first appears and sparing his life will help you out in the long run. So we advise you enjoy his little run, complete his transaction, and let him go on his merry way.
