We’re out here shooting doppelgangers, fighting for our lives against entities, and ensuring the store is spick-and-span at all times as we clock into our Shift at Midnight—all to save our beloved pet.

Even though there are fake humans, grotesque monsters, and supplies consisting of bear traps, wooden planks, and grenades, the medical bills are the most unrealistic part of Shift at Midnight. A supermarket simulator not too dissimilar from my four years in retail, here’s what you need to do to get all Shift at Midnight endings.

Shift at Midnight endings guide

The endings are determined by a decision you make in the endgame and how much money you’ve accumulated working the night shift. This is separate from the store revenue, which you can spend on upgrades and buying tools or weapons.

You can expect a $10 daily wage from completing a shift plus 10 percent of the store’s revenue should you surpass the store’s quota for the day. This sum is what you need to pay for your pet’s medicine and, most importantly, their surgery on night 13, which you’re warned about after completing the tenth shift.

Paying for medicine means your pet can join the next shift, which is incredibly helpful for solo players who need assistance, but you shouldn’t do this all the time; otherwise, you won’t have enough in your personal funds to pay for the surgery.

Story Mode consists of 13 shifts where you need to accumulate $250 to pay for your pet’s surgery. Whether you do this or not determines which ending you’ll get.

Grave Decision

On the twelfth night, you’re given the option to call Sheriff Clyde after completing the shift. If you choose to call him because you know you won’t be able to pay for your pet’s surgery, Clyde will visit at the risk of his own life. He doesn’t make it, but your pet survives, the surgery covered.

All you have to do differently in this ending is not call Clyde and fail to accumulate $250 to pay for the surgery. Clyde survives as he doesn’t visit the store on the thirteenth shift, but your pet doesn’t.

Here you need to refrain from calling the Sheriff so that he survives. Much like HELLMART, the rest relies on your ability to keep customers happy by cleaning the store, filling the shelves, and decorating the shopfloor. You should also complete Store Manager’s requests such as catching shoplifters or cleaning the forest out back to get bonuses.

Reach $250 by night 13 so that you can pay for the surgery.

Shooting humans penalizes you by docking your pay when your shift ends, so be careful! Here’s what you need to do every shift to ensure you get the best payslip every night.

  • Search for Tokens at the start of the night (don’t read the notice board; otherwise, the shift will start).
  • Don’t use all your Tokens but spin the wheel to get as much of today’s revenue as you can (by landing on $10)
  • Don’t shoot any human customers. If you’re not sure whether you’re serving a doppelganger, it’s safer to let them go and survive the hunt to ensure you have as much money as possible.
  • Clean any mess left by people you’ve shot using the sledgehammer to destroy flesh and hose to blitz any bloodstains (purchasable on the computer). These items are more efficient than the mop. Efficiency is key to getting more money from customers.
  • Keep shelves stocked at all times, don’t keep people waiting at the till, and upgrade the shopfloor to satisfy customers.
  • Serve doppelgangers and complete their transaction, then kill them with the firearm (or any weapon you have on hand) to take their money and save yourself from being hunted (unless it’s a Blood Moon).

Both Clyde and your pet will survive, giving you the best Shift at Midnight ending. Make sure you don’t accidentally kill the Sheriff when he visits, otherwise you will be locked out of the endings as there won’t be the option to call Clyde before the last day.
