The stranglehold that Grand Theft Auto 6 has on pop culture and casual gaming has been well-documented, but an NBA player illustrated it quite well today at one of the league’s team’s media day.
Houston Rockets center Steven Adams was talking with the media when he issued a stern warning about what to expect during this season, specifically in November. Even more specifically, on Nov. 19 when a certain anticipated new video game launches.
“I will say: you guys should anticipate November,” Adams said at the press conference today. “The performance of the league…league-wide. GTA is dropping. So look at NFL, look at all the leagues and watch them plummet, mate. Just for the month of November performance is gonna go down. It should come back up, though. Most of the boys’ll get it done, hopefully they finish the game.”
Adams’ words are funny, but not necessarily a joke. They evoke memories of memes surrounding NFL quarterback Kyler Murray and his Call of Duty addiction, with fans suggesting his statistics during the game’s double XP weekends were lower than normal ones.
But it’s not just the players to watch out for, according to Adams. Even the staff behind the league’s teams are on notice that they may be under heavy scrutiny when it comes to GTA 6’s long-anticipated release.
“Coaching as well, by the way,” Adams continued. “The coaching and scouts are gonna be horrendous, mate, just for November, but it should bounce back in December, hopefully. Should be good.”
Adams is a 12-year veteran of the league, so he knows a thing or two about locker rooms and the players within them. Like most gamers come Nov. 19, Adams believes that he and his teammates may be a bit distracted on their PS5’s and Xbox Series X’s when the sequel comes out, so statisticians and (unfortunately) sports bettors may want to keep their eye on how it all shakes out.
