True Detective is an anthology show, so it was always going to run into the problem of certain seasons being significantly better than others. In its case, though, the first season knocked it out of the park so hard that nothing after it came even close and ran into the additional issue of being kind of trash.
The epitome of garbage materialized as True Detective: Night Country, the fourth and most recent season starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as the lead duo. It had all the hallmarks of a horrible show: plot inconsistencies, too much time spent on irrelevant characters, boring and distracting subplots, subpar acting—not to mention writing and dialogue that made you want to go smoke a pack of cigarettes just to feel something other than pure dread at how someone could write and produce such scenes.
But now, a small sliver of light at the end of an excruciatingly long lava-floored tunnel rears its head: True Detective season five will star Antonio Banderas and Nicolas Cage.

As confirmed by Variety last night, Antonio Banderas has been confirmed as Nic Cage’s co-star in the newest season of True Detective. The pair will take the show to Jamaica Bay, New York, replacing Night Country‘s frigid Alaska. While we don’t know much about the plot or the characters, Variety reports that Banderas’ character is Rai García, while Cage plays Henry Logan.
These are both powerful actors who have all the charisma and the skills in the world to depict the noir, brooding detective, which I fear will most likely be Cage, not least because of his experience with Spider-Noir just this year. Banderas’ character I see as his more eccentric and up-and-going counterpart, not much unlike Woody Harrelson’s character compared to McConaughey’s Rustin Cohle.
Unfortunately for everyone, however, the show will once again be written and directed by Isa López, who brought us the dumpster fire that was Night Country, but I hope the pair will counteract her knack for horrible writing through their fine acting skills. Jodie Foster certainly couldn’t, but hey, perhaps lightning can strike.
True Detective‘s fifth season begins filming next year.
