Leap Motion has revealed a new 3D motion controller tech that makes everything else look like a complete joke. As you can see demonstrated in the above video, Leap looks to be able to provide users with a variety of controls all with the simple use of your own two hands. Everything from drawing, navigation, gaming, and more look to be all possible with extreme precision.
The Leap device is a result of four years of research by the company’s co-founder, David Holz. Leap is accurate to within 1/100 of a millimeter, and is able to “sense the individual movements of all 10 of the user’s fingers.”
The device itself plugs into a standard USB port, and users will be able to create their own custom gestures, as well as network multiple Leap’s together to create a larger interactive space. While the company is only focusing on computers right now, Leap Motion’s CEO, Michael Buckwald, believes the software can work with “smartphones, tablets, cars, refrigerators” and more.
On top of all this, Leap will be providing thousands of free Leap software development kits in order to bring in developers to create applications that they can then monetize on the Leap app platform. For everyone else, you can pre-order the Leap for $69.99, and the device will ship out this Winter.
It all looks amazing in concept, but it’s something I need to experience for myself to see if it can work as promised.
