The winner of Destructoid’s best of 2013 community choice

Best of 2013

Oh my god this was an amazing year for gaming. There were so many extraordinary releases from studios big and small that I may never have a chance to play them all — talk about a wonderful, lucky “problem” to have!

But of course, at the end of the day, only one game can take home the coveted Destructoid Community Choice Award. So after a week of intense voting, debating, and a surprising lack of name-calling, we are finally ready to unveil your pick for the best game of 2013. ARE YOU AS EXCITED AS I AM?!

And the winner is…

The Last of Us

I’ve made no attempt to mask my absolute adoration for Naughty Dog’s dismal tale of survival and redemption. It was my favorite game to grace the PlayStation 3, as well as my favorite gaming moment of the year. Jim Sterling was equally impressed, awarding it a 10 out of 10 in our official review. In my mind, it is as close to perfection as a videogame can get, and many, many of you agreed with that sentiment; in fact, The Last of Us received more votes than BioShock Infinite, Super Mario 3D World, and Grand Theft Auto V combined!

So congratulations to Sony Computer Entertainment and Naughty Dog, winners of the 2013 Destructoid Game of the Year Community Choice Award! And thank you, from all of us who had the chance to enjoy your beautiful creation.

Here were your runners-up, in order of votes received:

  • BioShock Infinite
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • Dota 2
  • Ni No Kuni
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • Tomb Raider
  • Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Congratulations to all the nominees! And thanks to everyone who voted!
