Untethered and tethered, respectively
It’s a huge day for Oculus VR, as they’re getting ready to ship two brand new projects today: the Oculus Quest (the untethered system that runs higher-end games than the previous Oculus Go model) and the Oculus Rift S (the PC-dependent traditional VR headset, which has fully replaced the original 1.0 “Rift” SKU). Both are shipping for $399.99.
If you’re eyeing a Quest, you can read our review here. The heavy-hitters are Superhot VR, Robo Recall: Unplugged (a port of the original), Beat Saber, Dead and Buried II (a western arena style FPS), and Vader: Immortal. Most, if not all of the exclusives are timed, and will be arriving on Rift at some point. However, the ability to just boot it up and mess around anywhere, even on vacation, is part of what makes the Quest so enticing: only enthusiasts will feel like they’re missing out on the bigger games.
As for the Rift S, you can read our review here to see if it’s worth either picking one up or upgrading with. TLDR: it is, particularly if you don’t have a VR system yet. This thing can run basically every VR game currently on the market, typically through the Oculus marketplace and Steam VR.
