The rumor mill is swirling around Destiny developer Bungie again, but this time, it means the studio could be going to a galaxy far, far away.

That’s right, Bungie may be leaving the solar system for something bigger and potentially massive, according to rumors in Electronic Gaming Monthly that were re-circulated today by Giant Bomb and Game Mess Mornings’ host Jeff Grubb.

On today’s podcast, Grubb cited an entry in the latest EGM issue that says Disney “has big plans for the Star Wars Battlefront series,” and Lucasfilm has been “aggressively deploying probe droids for a development partner to take on the task of creating a follow-up” to Battlefront 2.

Two major game studios are “circling” the project, according to the same rumors, and those are EA Dice, which made the last game in the series that somehow released all the way back in 2017 and hasn’t had a sequel yet…and Bungie. But the rumor ends there, leaving fans of Star Wars, Destiny, and Marathon alike left to wonder what could be.

It is kind of mind-blowing that Battlefront 2 came out nine years ago now, and even more ridiculous that there hasn’t been a follow-up yet. The game has had a few renaissance periods after some loot box scandals way back when, but it feels like a slam dunk in the right hands. Whose hands are those? Dice, after its work on Battlefield 6, or Bungie, looking to dive into another sci-fi FPS?

Bungie’s future is potentially in limbo beyond this March, which is the current end of the roadmap for its current ongoing game, Marathon. There are also plans to unvault Destiny 2 content, and the studio said that franchise isn’t totally over yet, either.

Is it possible that the FPS-centric studio could be given the reins to Battlefront? Sure. Especially if it can bring in a huge licensing fee for Bungie and its owners at Sony, and since the studio has already worked alongside Lucasfilm with its Destiny 2: Renegades DLC.

But for now, this is all just conjecture, so don’t pull out your lightsabers or blasters just yet. Given the Star Wars hot streak this year with games like Zero Company and Galactic Racer, though, you could see why Disney would be hot on the heels of more games.
