The Steam Machine has had a lot of hype ever since its announcement late last year, but now that it’s finally here, it’s proving to be quite a dramatic piece of equipment. First, everyone was a little shocked by the price (not really; AI made damn sure we got used to everything being expensive), but now it seems the little box that could is having a rough time working properly.
As first spotted by Digital Foundry, a user on the r/SteamMachine subreddit submitted the first apparent case of the “Red Line of Death,” a moniker taking after the Xbox 360 and its notorious early-2000s crisis with the “Red Ring of Death.” As the name indicates, a red line appeared across the machine’s LED light, accompanied by a glowing red dot emanating from its power button.
When the issue appeared, the Steam Machine seemed to have been completely bricked, with the manual indicating that this red line is a sign of critical GPU failure. With the GPU soldered to the Steam Machine’s motherboard, swapping it out isn’t such an easy job, meaning the user will probably have to go to Valve directly for help with this issue.
As the user explains, they only managed to get some 20 minutes of use before the Machine went kaput, five of which were spent on playing No Man’s Sky. The other 15? Updating firmware and ensuring all was up to snuff and ready for some heavy gamin’. But I guess the Machine doesn’t like spacefaring sandbox games.
For reference, the Steam Machine has three Red Lines of Death: a big dark one meaning your device is overheating, the one like in the picture above that signals a dead GPU, and a similar but shorter one that tells you the bad news of your RAM going to greener pastures. I hope Valve’s QA process is good enough to minimize the amount of Red Lines, but if we’re getting them this early, I’d say it might be a solid idea to wait a little before committing to a purchase.
Not that you could get one even if you wanted to, since they’re all, naturally, sold out.
