Sony’s firm belief in 3DTV as the future has been given a little extra cement by SCEE president Andrew House, who has restated the company’s faith in the technology, and also noted that people will shift to 3D at a faster rate than HD was embraced.
“It is a technology shift against challenging economic circumstances for a lot of countries in Europe. So that is something that makes us pause a bit,” says House. “Rather than saying when the tipping point will be, I do think it will be a faster adoption than the shift from standard to high definition.
“I think the benefits of 3D are a lot more tangible in an interactive experience. It is also the one 3D experience that is, to a great degree, not replicable outside of the home. Our role is to act as a pioneer, as evangelists and to help developers get the right experience with 3D games. We’ve done some great groundwork and I think you’ll see 3D games come to fruition next year.”
3DTV is some cool stuff, but I’m still not entirely sure that I want it in my home at all times. I fear it would get old rather quickly, especially with potential eye strain and having to wear goofy glasses. Sure, it’s fun to gawk at in Best Buy now and then, but for several hours playing Killzone 3? I’m not yet sold.
