Sonic the Hedgehog is turning thirty-five, and Sega is honoring the Blue Blur’s mid-life milestone in style with Sonic the Hedgehog: Memories and Beyond, an epic animated short celebrating the franchise’s history and future.
Premiering November 12, 2026, the short follows Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, and Rouge as they try to stop Dr. Eggman from upgrading Metal Sonic into the ultimate weapon. This premise might sound like standard Sonic fare at first, but the short’s new teaser makes it clear Sonic and the gang won’t have an easy time.
If this short’s title and preview are any indication, memories will play a key role in this seminal Sonic adventure, with Dr. Eggman seemingly infusing Metal Sonic with the power of Sonic’s own memories. Suffice it to say, facing off against the nostalgia-powered Metal will force Sonic and his friends to reflect on their shared history, complete with mid-battle flashbacks that will surely imbue them with the raw power of friendship à la Dragon Ball.
Centering Sonic’s thirty-first birthday celebration on the franchise’s in-world history is a pretty obvious choice, but I doubt the short will be just a look back at the Blue Blur’s past. And it really shouldn’t be.

As Sonic fans already know well, change is one of the franchise’s only constants. Since his debut on the Sega Genesis, Sonic has been on one heck of a journey as a video game mascot, plummeting to deep lows before rocketing back to impressive heights. But only recently has the series finally acknowledged how much it’s changed since the good old days of sixteen-bit processing.
Ever since long-time comics author Ian Flynn took the reins as the series’ de facto chief narrative developer, Sonic the Hedgehog has consistently rejected the crippling nostalgia addiction that has claimed so many other franchises. The last major Sonic game, Sonic Frontiers, highlighted how much Sonic’s relationship with his closest friend has changed over the years. This shift towards a more introspective mindset has also carried into other Sonic media, including spin-offs like Memories and Beyond.
By pitting Sonic and friends against a foe powered by memories of the way things used to be, Memories and Beyond is, in a roundabout way, putting the franchise’s past and future on a collision course. While the short clearly aims to honor the series’ history with some satisfying fan service, it’s also obvious it will embrace the forward momentum that’s defined the series’ latest entries and push Sonic and pals into the future.
