Huge build ups followed by swift and terrifying crashes are what being a Sonic fan is all about, so it’s very fitting that UK theme park Alton Towers is naming one of its rollercoasters after the spiky blue whore.
A representative from the park has claimed that Alton Towers is rebranding its “Spinball Whizzer” ride this year, renaming it “Sonic Spinball.” Apparently this is to “coincide with the relaunch of Sonic in 2010.” The ride structure will be repainted from teal to a more Sonic-flavored blue sometime in February.
This is actually pretty big news, if you think about it. As far as we know, this Sonic “relaunch” must be a nod to Project Needlemouse, and if Alton Towers considers it big enough to try and cross-promote, it could mean that Sega is planning something rather huge indeed for its long-suffering mascot.
Could 2010 be the year of Sonic? Probably not, but it’s nice to pretend, at least for a few moments.
