SNK has announced that its incoming update, bringing a much-needed rollback netcode update to the sword-swingin’ Samurai Shodown, has been met with an unfortunate delay, and is now expected to launch later this summer on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms.

“SNK has been hard at work on the rollback netcode update for Samurai Shodown, originally slated for a spring 2023 release,” said the developer in a statement. “The 1st Community Beta Test offered us great insight as to what we needed to improve. However, as a result of various setbacks and extenuating circumstances during development and in light of our ongoing efforts to further enhance player experience, we have made the decision to push back the official release of the update to late summer 2023.”

“We deeply apologize to our valued customers and passionate fans who have eagerly awaited this update, as well as for any disappointment this decision has caused.”

The studio notes that it intends to hold a second Community Beta Test at some point later in June, on order to further analyze data and fine-tune the new online experience. As I’ve noted before, Samurai Shodown is a great, highly unique fighter, which stands apart from its contemporaries due to its very specific and deliberate fighting style, which sees high damage landed in just a few hits. Hopefully, the update will help the game’s passionate and dedicated community welcome a few newcomers.

Samurai Shodown is available now on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The update will not be applied to the Nintendo Switch edition, however.
