Following the announcement of Apple’s new next-generation MacBook Pro with Retina display yesterday, some of you questioned that games would even be able to run well at its 2880 x 1800 resolution with the included graphics hardware.
Tech site Anandtech took the above screencap of Diablo III running at 2880 x 1800, so Apple’s fancy new MacBook Pro works at least well enough to do that. Running the game at this max resolution, with high texure quality, high clutter density, high physics quality, anti-aliasing on and medium shadow quality, Anandtech says that Diablo III was “quite playable.” Note that the above scene was running at 27 frames per second. In the most stressful scene they have unlocked, the machine was still pulling off 20 fps at this res. Obviously things are smoother at lower resolutions.
In related news, Anandtech found that while the OS caps the resolution at 1920 x 1200, games are not set to this limit. They say that Portal 2 was also able to start in 2880 x 1800, though the console text was almost microscopic. This shows that, despite games not having trouble booting in this resoltuion, game makers will still have to update their games to be fully compatible with the Retina display.
