Super Smash Bros. will apparently use near-field communication technology on the Wii U, according to a published statement from Nintendo France managing director Stephan Bole in Le Figaro.

“E3 will also be an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology on Nintendo consoles. The NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros.,” Bole told the French newspaper.

Earlier this month during its annual financial results briefing, Nintendo announced plans to use the technology, which allows for wireless communication between devices within a certain proximity.  In the past, NFC has been used to great effect in both Activision’s insanely popular Skylanders series, as well as Disney Infinity.

What this means exactly for Super Smash Bros. remains uncertain for the time being. Hopefully players won’t need to purchase a chest full of fancy toys to unlock the fighting game’s roster.
