R.I.P. glossy Xbox 360 S: 2010 – 2011

If you buy and Xbox 360 this holiday, don’t expect to be able to check your teeth for food bits in its reflection. Microsoft has announced that it’s ditching the glossy look of the console this holiday.

“We are actively transitioning all our Xbox 360 S consoles to a matte finish,” writes Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb on his blog. “The consoles will start to arrive in stores over the coming weeks, so if you really love the idea of a glossy console don’t wait much longer.”

There were no reasons given for the switch, but it’s likely related to production or material costs. Good news, though: the Kinect unit will continue to be a glossy black. It’s the small things.
