Sony is ready to face the furor of the internet this week when State of Play returns in two separate iterations.

For the first time since the announcement that PlayStation will end production of disc-based games starting in 2028, PlayStation will run two live-streamed presentations about upcoming games.

The first showcase will be “featuring updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners, concluding with an extended look at the vast world of Final Fantasy VII Revelation from our friends at Square Enix.”

Once the first State of Play ends, a State of Play Japan will take place, with “deep dives into upcoming games from game studios in Japan and Asia, including new gameplay, announcements, and more.” But that’s not really the story here, is it? Judging by the replies to the announcement on social media, a lot of the most vocal social media users are still none too pleased about the physical disc situation.

PlayStation has been the subject of intense ire ever since its announcement in July, so the gaming industry and its fans will be tuning in (and angrily spamming the chat) to sound off about what’s been shown, and possibly what’s not being said at all.

Will Sony address the situation at all? I doubt it, but I also wouldn’t be surprised to hear some PR-friendly jargon talking about how they hear players’ complaints. I don’t think they’ll double down on their stance, though, as I think the most likely option is that the State of Play will go off without any mention of it at all. We shall see.

As far as actual games, I’m excited to see more of FF7 Revelation. Beyond that, we could see a launch trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, and potentially some long-awaited updates on games in development (Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, where have you gone?) along the way, but a number of upcoming third-party titles set to launch throughout the end of the year taking the focus is most likely.

The State of Play showcase begins on Sept. 3 at 8am CT, so grab your coffees in the US and get ready to watch along or spam the Enter key in the chatrooms to voice your displeasure.
