Bayonetta is one of the cornerstones of gaming culture. She’s one of those icons from the vast roster of Japanese game characters that a lot of people can at least recognize, even if they aren’t necessarily gamers themselves.
So far, there’ve been three games in the Bayonetta series, but two are sadly stuck in Nintendo prison and only available on its own platforms, namely the Nintendo Switch and the Wii U while that was still around. Only the first game can be purchased on Steam, while the second and third games remain elusive to the broader gaming world, including those playing on consoles like the PlayStation or Xbox. However (and you didn’t hear it from me), there are apparently ways to get Switch games to work on other platforms. Dunno how, but word on the street says as much.

But none of this means that Bayonetta is done, and now PlatinumGames has said that it wants to expand the game’s world and develop Bayonetta further as a character. According to Nintendo Everything (which translated Atsushi Inaba’s interview for Famitsu into English), the company is interested in working on further Bayonetta projects after announcing that the character’s outfits are coming to Stellar Blade, itself heavily inspired by this iconic franchise.
Inaba said that PlatinumGames wishes “to expand her as a character and broaden her world” but that players will have to “wait to see exactly what shape that will take.” He did not offer any further comments on the matter. It’s worth remembering that Hideki Kamiya, Bayonetta‘s creator and director, is no longer at PlatinumGames, and it remains to be seen what sort of impact his absence would have on the character and her story.
Bayonetta remains one of my favorite character-action games ever created, and whatever comes next, I sure hope it’s released on as many platforms as possible, since the idea of gatekeeping such a broad game on a platform dominated by a very different kind of title is genuinely ludicrous to me. And it has been for a decade now.
