Patch 4.2 coming later this month for Final Fantasy XIV, will heavily focus on Final Fantasy VI

Major spoiler confirmation at the bottom

Square Enix dumped a ton of info on Patch 4.2 for Final Fantasy XIV in the early morning today, just 11 days before it’s actually scheduled to arrive. It’s called “Rise of a New Sun,” and will see a number of alterations to the housing market in addition to the standard new dungeons, story quests, trials, and raids.

A new set of trials is confirmed, focusing on “The Four Lords” — Jade Stoa and Byakko have been highlighted, which draw from the lore of Chinese constellations. Ninja, Red Mage, Bard, Dragoon, and Samurai aren’t getting any real changes, but tanks are getting shaken up the most as Dark Knights and Warriors are getting buffs, and Paladins are getting damage nerfs. A hard remake of The Fractal Continuum dungeon is coming, as well as the all-new Hells’ Lid. A Crystal Tower Training Grounds PVP map is also in the pipeline.

Perhaps one of the biggest shakeups is housing. Six new wards are being added to each area, which can be purchased on week after 4.2, allotted to Free Companies (guilds) first with specific plots. Then personal housing will come “at a later date,” with the restriction of one private and one Free Company estate per world, per service account. That’s a pretty huge move to circumvent hardcore gil farmers from buying up entire wards. To prevent controversy, a new housing website is being built to explain the entire situation so people know what’s up.

Spoilers below:

As for the spoiler-heavy stuff, they basically confirmed Phantom Train as the first boss for Omega Sigmascape, the new raid tier — and another major Final Fantasy VI villain outright. As a reminder, the last tier was focused on Final Fantasy V and ended with a battle against Ex-Death. While it’s just speculation, it’s possible that the next tier could center on Final Fantasy VII, though they need to make room for the final fight with Omega itself somewhere in there (XIV raids typically have three tiers in total).
