Over 6 million players pick up co-op scare-tuber game Content Warning on its free launch day

It also features an over 200,000 concurrent player peak.

During April 1, within the mix of Aprils Fools game releases, announcements, and game updates, Content Warning came rolling in with a free-to-play launch day. During the first 24 hours of launch, it amassed over 6,000,000 Steam downloads, peaking at over 200,000 concurrent players before re-releasing as a paid game, making it one of the most successful game launches in 2024.

Landfall’s celebratory announcement highlighting this achievement describes multiple accomplishments for Content Warning during its 24-hour free-to-play period, with some including surpassing 200,000 concurrent players and having over 6.2 million people pick up the game. Its free period lasted from the game’s release on April 1 to April 2 at 9 a.m. PT. It’s now available as a paid game for $7.99 or your regional equivalent.

Reaching 200k concurrent players makes Content Warning easily pierce through the top Steam Charts, surpassing games like Stardew Valley, Helldivers 2, and Grand Theft Auto V’s current counts. It’s also approaching popular horror game Lethal Company’s all-time peak Steam, with the latter breaking through 240,000 concurrents before dipping down to its current 30,000 players.

Alongside these accomplishments, Landfall also describes a few major bugs they plan to fix, including voice chat issues, connection and hosting bugs, and camera footage failing to extract. Landfall mentions they have leads on these issues and have fixes planned for tomorrow morning.

Much of its popularity likely comes from its similarities to Lethal Company, particularly its premise of exploring dark areas, escaping from monsters, and reaching view quotas within specific timeframes. Combined with its free-to-play launch, it stands as another massive hit alongside it in the co-op horror genre, with its growth hopefully continuing after its swap to a paid game.
