Possibly from People Can Fly

Which games does Square Enix have lined up for E3 2019 besides Final Fantasy VII Remake and Marvel’s Avengers? Here’s another name: Outriders. Expect to see that pop up during the company’s live-streamed E3 presentation on Monday, June 10 at 6:00pm Pacific. The teasing has begun.

Details are slim today’s “Awaken” footage only shows a woman waking up in a cryopod before fading to reveal a compass-esque logo but I’m confident that whatever this sci-fi game is, it can’t possibly go over worse than The Quiet Man. I appreciate the attempt to try new things, but talk about a miss.

Who’s handling development on Outriders? That’s unclear right now, but Bulletstorm maker People Can Fly is a smart guess. The two companies were working on a triple-A shooter together, last we heard.

The game’s Twitter feed has a handful of in-universe clues. One tweet mentions the Flores setting course for Enoch, “which may well be humanity’s last hope and salvation,” while another describes the state of the Earth as “turning catastrophic.” It seems the ship will reach its destination, but contact with our former home will fizzle out. Outriders seemingly begins in the year 2076. I like that setup.

Square Enix has the right idea getting this name out there before E3 and all of the adjacent events are in full effect. It’s going to be a busy week and conditioning us to expect a new IP is the way to go. Now we’ll vaguely recognize Outriders in between the heavy hitters shown during Monday’s stream.
