No surprise: Super Mario Galaxy tears it up at retail

As expected, Super Mario Galaxy was a pretty great game. We’re pretty sure it could have been an epic disaster, and still sold a ton, so we’re not surprised when Nintendo’s George Harrison brags about its success.

Super Mario Galaxy had the strongest one-week debut of any Wii game to date and has also become the best-selling Mario title ever in its first week, with U.S. sales of more than 500,000, based on internal sales figures,” he says in a press release issued today.

It’s not over yet — consumers are still tearing apart retail outlets in Wii rages, looking for the elusive console. It would be criminal is the game didn’t sell one-to-one with every installed unit, and when the smoke clears, that will likely be the case.
