‘Nintendo Switch is our primary sales objective’
It’s always great to get a clearer picture of what’s happening with Nintendo as the Switch increasingly moves into the stratosphere of success.
Watching them mostly go silent last generation with the Wii U wasn’t very fun to watch, but now the publisher has a sense of unbridled enthusiasm with the wildly successful console/handheld hybrid, significantly mixing things up and forcing more competition (their partnering with Microsoft for cross-play was assuredly the impetus for Sony finally caving).
Speaking to Sankei, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa had a lot to say about the Switch, noting its recent successes like Super Mario Party (1.5 million copies), Pokemon Let’s Go (3m cumulatively for both games) and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (5m). He also muses on continuing their mobile strategy even though “dedicated gaming hardware” is their focus (much to the delight of many who lament the mobile space), calling it “one means of supporting our pillars of revenue.”
Remaining stalwart with his goal to push 20 million units this fiscal year, Furukawa notes, “It is an extremely ambitious, but worthwhile achievement. So, we will maintain this goal. Nintendo Switch is our primary sales objective, and we are not considering a successor or a price cut at this time.” While anything could change, and there could be a top-secret lab underneath Tokyo where Nintendo is testing a Switch Slim or a Switch Pro, this is what we’re getting officially at the moment.
