New video of unreleased GoldenEye XBLA game unearthed

Crying tears of gold

Once upon a time, Rare was working on an updated port of GoldenEye 007 for Xbox 360. This remaster, in addition to having updated textures and models, would have included online play and a special split-screen online option.

Whomever is to blame for the cancellation (*cough* Nintendo *cough*), we’ve only ever seen small snippets of the project from Unseen64. Today, website Rare Thief has unveiled half-an-hour of footage for us.

Quite honestly, I still GoldenEye is a stone-cold classic. The biggest problem with the game is its lackluster performance, which rarely maintains 30 frames per second. The control scheme is also strange, though no more so than other shooters from the same era.

Rare showed with the Perfect Dark XBLA port that a simple update can shed beautiful light on a misunderstood classic. I have no doubt in my mind that GoldenEye would have lit the world on fire if Rare were able to release it on Xbox 360.

Whether or not this project will ever surface on modern consoles is a mystery. Having this bit of footage, though, we can all dream of what life would be with a silky smooth port of GoldenEye.
